Stage 1. Storage Unit Configuration -
The first stage of configuring the inventory within eLabNext is setting up the storage locations. The video below outlines the process of configuring and creating storage unit templates and adding layers and levels (Shelf, Tower, Rack, Sample Box) to these newly created storage units.
Quick Tips for Storage Unit Configuration:
- Once the storage unit template is created, it can be duplicated to set up multiple storage units of the same configuration in bulk.
- Naming convention suggestion: Location – Name – Description – Identifier: For example, "Rm 120 – ULT Freezer – Eppendorf CryoCube – AssetID:123."
- Standardize storage unit layout by creating Compartment layers:
- i.e. Shelves, Racks, Boxes
- i.e. Towers, Boxes

Stage 2. Sample Type Configuration -
After creating the locations to store the group's samples, the next step is to create the sample templates themselves. The video below outlines adding sample types, creating custom metadata fields and configuring sample settings and sections.
Quick Tips for Sample Type Configuration:
- Standardize Sample Types: Collaborate with Key Users to define the fields for each sample type within the group. Sample types create a structure for your end-users to follow when collecting sample metadata and enhance compliance. Utilize custom fields, mandatory fields and input validation for each sample type as needed.

Stage 3. Adding Samples -
Once the group's sample types have been created, users can begin to add samples to the previously created storage units. The video below outlines the process of creating or bulk importing samples, as well as managing and editing samples already within the system.
Quick Tips for Adding Sample:
- The use of the Sample batch Import and Update Add-ons will help speed up the creation and management of samples within the system.
